Evaluation - Question 3

The distribution company that would produce and distribute my film would be New Line Cinema (US). They have produced many films including Sex in the City, The time travellers wife, The Notebook and Four Christmases. They don't just produce romance films, however they do produce a lot of the more successful ones. They would want to produce my film as it is generally typical of the type of film that they would produce.

New Line Cinema produce many romantic comedies and therefore would know the target market very well. This would benefit me as they know exactly what the target market wants and what appeals to them. Therefore they would be able to conduct good advertisements and market the product well. This would benefit my film as advertising is arguably the most crucial part in film production because with good advertising you can almost guarantee the audience will watch your film and that increases sales and therefore profit.

New Line Cinema would want my film because many of theirs are romantic comedies where as my film focuses mainly on the romance element. They have produced films like this before such as The notebook however they mainly produce romantic comedies. Therefore they will know about the target market and genre however my film would fill a gap in their market as it is purely based on romance. Films make money from the advertisements played at the start before the movie, therefore by filling a gap in the market, any advertisement can come and use an advertisement in the film as there will be a film that it can go in that will appeal to that target market.

The company has a good reputation and films they have produced have been very successful. This is beneficial as the audience will expecting a good film due to their reputation therefore will be more likely to go and see the film. This will therefore increase sales and therefore profit which will benefit me and the production company.

My film would be a mainstream product with general release. I have decided this as my main inspiration is The Notebook. Researching into this films release it was a general release and therefore released to most multiplex cinemas in the country. This is due to the wide audience and I hope to create the same impact with my product. Here are some other films that were produced by New Line Cinema as a mainstream product.

Over 50% of a films advertising is through the internet. The internet will be where most of the advertising is due to many things. The internet is quickly getting more and more popular with more people taking notice of the advertisements on there. Also, my target audience are likely to be in education or starting jobs and therefore will be increasingly using the internet more and more. Social media is another way i will advertise my product. Social Media is free to use and is incredibly popular with my target audience. It also appeals to a mass location as people all over the country use it. Also, I will advertise through film trailers that are before films in the same genre. For example a film advertisement before the film the notebook. I think that this would be beneficial because the audience watching the notebook would be the same one that would be targeted for my film and therefore the advertisements need to be aimed at them. I will advertise through posters that can be posted onto the side of busses or bus stops. This will attract attention to my film as busses travel all around towns and cities and therefore would be advertising my film everywhere they go. Finally I would advertise by creating a movie trailer with all of the best bits from my film in it. This would be played before the water shed on TV to attract as many people as possible. By showing the best bits the audience would recognise how good the film is and would therefore be persuaded to go and watch it or buy it on DVD.
My video would be distributed through many different methods. The primary source of distribution would be being able to purchase it at shops through a DVD or Blue ray copy. However technology is developing faster and my film would also be able to be purchased online off of youtube. This would appeal to my target audience as it is easy to use and easily accessible to them. My film would be on general release and therefore would go to many multiplex cinemas for the audience to be able to watch there. The film would be determined on how successful it was by the number of tickets sold in the box office on the first weekend and around 80% of the takings would go to my distributer. Another way my film would be distributed is through film festivals. This should really appeal to my target market as generally people who go to film festivals have a real interest in watching films. I would also make my product available to buy off of SKY movies or XBOX live. This makes it accessible to people without having to leave the house but it still allows them to watch it on their big screen.
